Frequently asked questions

For most healthy adults, the ketogenic diet is safe when followed correctly. It's been studied for decades and used medically since the 1920s. However, it's not right for everyone — pregnant or nursing women, people with certain liver or pancreatic conditions, and those with a history of disordered eating should avoid it. Always check with your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication for diabetes or blood pressure.

Most people lose 5–10 pounds in the first 1–2 weeks, largely from water weight as your body burns through glycogen stores. After that, a healthy, sustainable rate is 1–2 pounds per week. Weight loss is rarely linear — expect stalls and whooshes — so focus on trends over time rather than the daily scale number.

Keto flu is a collection of symptoms — headaches, fatigue, irritability, brain fog, and muscle cramps — that hit some people during the first week as your body adapts to burning fat instead of carbs. It's caused by dehydration and electrolyte loss, not an actual illness. The fix is simple: drink plenty of water and replenish sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Not forever, but it helps a lot in the beginning. Tracking your carbs (keeping under 20–30g net daily) is the most important part. As you get a feel for portion sizes and which foods fit, most people can transition to a more intuitive approach. Use a tracking app for the first 2–4 weeks to build the habit.

Absolutely. While it's more challenging without meat, a vegetarian keto diet is totally doable by focusing on eggs, full-fat dairy, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, avocados, and low-carb vegetables. Just watch your protein intake and make sure you're getting enough variety. A vegan keto diet is possible too, though it requires more planning.
